چکیده

The present study explores non-durational correlates of the word-initial voiceless stop singleton/geminate contrast in Kelantan Malay (KM) by focusing on the relative values of amplitude and F0 across two syllables of disyllabic words. We are particularly interested in identifying any inter-syllabic differences that could potentially enhance the acoustic salience of voiceless stop geminates in utterance-initial position, given the lack of acoustic closure duration in this specific context. Results indicate that relative amplitude and relative F0 across syllables do contribute to the differentiation of word-initial voiceless stop singletons and geminates in KM, with amplitude and F0 ratios being usually significantly higher in the geminate context. The effect is further enhanced for utterance-initial tokens and it is also consistent across places of articulation. The conclusion is drawn that the word-initial voiceless stop length contrast in KM can also be characterized by differing amplitude/F0 ratios alongside the wellknown primary acoustic correlate of closure duration.

Durational Correlates of Word-initial Voiceless Geminate Stops: The Case of Kelantan Malay

This paper investigates the production of wordinitial geminate consonants in Kelantan Malay with a focus on voiceless stops. It presents an acoustic phonetic analysis examining two acoustic parameters: closure duration and voice onset time (VOT). Evidence from a production experiment indicates that there is a clear durational contrast between word-initial voiceless geminate stops and their sing...

Acoustic Correlates of Voicing and Gemination in Bangla

The goal of this paper is to conduct an acoustic phonetic investigation of both primary and secondary cues that aid in the distinction between voiced and voiceless geminates in Bangla. Results of the statistical analyses examining both duration and nondurational correlates show that besides closure duration secondary cues such as the amplitude of the stop release burst and the fundamental frequ...

F0 Development in Acquiring Korean Stop Distinction

A number of studies have investigated the role of Voice Onset Time (VOT) on acquisition of stop voicing contrast. Korean stop contrasts (lenis, fortis, and aspirated), however, cannot be differentiated only by VOT since they are all pulmonic egressive voiceless stops. For this three-way distinction, another acoustic parameter, fundamental frequency (F0), critically operates. The present study e...

Gemination in Tarifit Berber: X-RAY AND ACOUSTIC DATA

This investigation reports on gemination in Tarifit, a variety of Berber language spoken in the North Eastern region of Morocco. It presents results of a simultaneous X-ray and acoustic investigation of singleton and geminate voiced and voiceless stops in three different word positions (initial, intervocalic, and final.) The acoustic parameters examined show that geminates are systematically pr...

Gemination at the junction of phonetics and phonology

Tashlhiyt Berber has contrastive singleton and lexical geminate consonants in all positions. In addition, it has two types of phonologically derived geminates: concatenated and assimilated ones. Within CV phonology, geminates, including post-lexical ones, are represented as single melodic units associated to two prosodic positions. This study examines the way these abstract autosegmental repres...
